TOP 5 REASON TO PICK PLAYA DEL COCO
It’s easy to get to. There are a lot of beautiful destinations in Costa Rica…many of which are difficult to get to, especially if you don’t have a car. Playas del Coco is just thirty minutes from the Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport airport in Liberia and five hours from the capital of San Jose. Buses and other transportation run frequently between both cities and Coco, making it one of the easier destinations to access. (See more info on how to get here from Liberia and San Jose.)
It’s family-friendly. While Playas del Coco is a definite hotspot for retirees from the US and Canada, it also has a surprising amount of international families and family activities. The laid back vibe and many activities in the area make it a great Costa Rica family destination.
You can visit nearly any destination in Guanacaste on a day trip from Playas del Coco. Want to explore other parts of Costa Rica on your trip? Playas del Coco is a great starting point for exploring the best parts of Guanacaste and surrounding areas. Popular destinations Arenal and Monteverde can both be visited on day trips, as well as other beautiful destinations like Rio Celeste and the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano.
Nicaragua is just two hours away. Nicaragua is just hours from Coco – close enough to visit on a day trip. San Juan del Sur is the easiest town to get to but the colonial city of Granada and the Masaya Volcano are also possible on a day trip. Why explore one country when you can explore two?
It’s safe. Playas del Coco is an incredibly safe beach town. Crime, especially geared towards tourists, is very minimal. Opportunist theft is the biggest issue so be sure to keep your purse close by and never leave things unattended on the beach. Avoid walking the beach after dark as well. But, in general, you don’t need to be any more cautious in Coco than you would be in your own town.
The town experienced rapid growth due to the increasing number of international visitors and foreign-born residents, who arrived in the 1990s. Since Playas del Coco is one of the few beach areas in Guanacaste with a rapidly expanding infrastructure, it has become a hub for tourism and business.
